I.    Basic Units and Organization of Data

The fundamental units for economics are dollars (or renminbi), quantity, time, and location. Quantities may be in terms of individual units like people.  Quantities may also be in terms of other fundamental or derived physical units such as Kilowatt hours.  Typically, price or quantity data is in quantity per unit time or price per unit time, such as barrels of oil per month or dollars per year.

II.    Some Fundamental Government Statistical Data Agencies

The Bureau of Labor Statistics
The Census Bureau
The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis
The Bureau of Economic Analysis
The National Bureau of Economic Research (not technically econ data.  The NBER determines the recession.)

IV.    Deriving new measures from GDP data.

GDP data can be used to calculate additional performance measures of the economy.  When combined with the workforce, and population data, measures of efficiency and standard of living can be obtained.

    IV.1    Worker Efficiency

The efficiency of a worker is how much output they produce.  GDP is the total amount of output for a period.  Dividing GDP by the number of employed workers that year gives the amount of GDP per worker.  It is important to used chained-dollar or real GDP rather than nominal.

    IV.2    Standard of Living

Similar to worker efficiency, the average standard of living is the amount of production consumed per person.  GDP is the total amount of output for a period.  It is then also the total amount of consumption for a period.  Dividing GDP by the total number of people in the population that year gives the amount of GDP per person.  It is important to used chained-dollar or real GDP rather than nominal.

[1] – Of all the economic data, population can be the most difficult.  I have had to find a number of series from different places and splice them together.  With the exception of the decade census, they are estimates so they don’t all match up.  Of course, the census is the most accurate.  You can find root current population survey data at www.census.gov.
